Certain Bible stories can feel so familiar that sometimes we breeze over them as if we already know the lesson or miracle so well. One such story I haven’t revisited in a long while is the classic rescue story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3.

King Nebuchadnezzar had a massive, golden image installed and commanded that everyone bow down to worship it. The majority did, but three, brave Jewish men chose not to follow orders.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were given one last opportunity to worship the idol or face instant death. They didn’t give in to fear. Instead, they declared that the God they served was able to save them from the blazing furnace. Yet, even if not rescued, they made it entirely clear that they would never give their praise to false gods or idols.

Miraculously, God sent an angel to protect these faithful men and not even their bodies or clothing were injured or damaged in the fire which had been heated seven times hotter than usual! God revealed his power to save and honor the trust his faithful servants had in him. Even King Nebuchadnezzar acknowledged God’s sovereignty that day!

It is an amazing testimony of faith and God’s ability to intervene at the exact time of need. Only three men were thrown into the fire, yet a fourth (an angel) was present and sent to protect. There wasn’t even a smell of fire on them when Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego emerged from the consuming flames.

Because they were rescued, it can be easily overlooked that there was a very real alternative ending to this story. These young men knew God’s ability and power to rescue, but they were also aware of God’s mysterious ways.

Prayers are not always answered according to what we desire. Some sickness is healed and others not. Some people that we love and pray for will find Jesus quickly while others will goes years without believing. Some couples will conceive quickly while others struggle with infertility. Some people get married while others are still longing for a spouse. Certain opportunities might be successful while others seemingly fail. There are dreams that live and others that die. There is mystery in God’s response to our prayers.

In our limited human understanding, we cannot fathom the depths of why some prayers are answered while others go unanswered. We cannot comprehend all the works God is doing.

The verse from Isaiah 55:9 comes to mind, “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Unlike us, God sees the larger picture. He is accomplishing more than we can see, even when it doesn’t look like a great outcome at all.

We can take encouragement from Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to possess and exercise an unwavering faith in God. As we pray specifically and anticipate God’s response, we can choose trust over disappointment, surrender over control, and faith over challenges. God is entirely capable to answer our prayers, but even if he does not answer in the way we had hoped, he is still sovereign and worthy of all our praise.
